It is a card holder that serves as a place for the draw and discard piles during play. This keeps the cards neatly stacked instead of scattered across the table.
Because this is primarily a children's game, the holder is sturdier so it can withstand more energetic handling by your little board-game fans.
The dimensions are also suitable for sleeved cards.
